Schwarzer Adler

For travellers who prefer being at the heart of the action rather than on the sidelines, Schwarzer Adler offers a new kind of urban retreat in Italy’s northernmost town. Located directly on the main square of Vipiteno (Sterzing), next to the iconic Twelve Tower, the property places guests in the centre of one of South Tyrol’s most charming historic towns. Picturesque arcades, boutique shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and cultural attractions are all just steps away. At the same time, the mountains of the Wipptal Valley are never far. Hiking, cycling and skiing opportunities begin just beyond the town limits, making Schwarzer Adler the perfect base for combining urban exploration with outdoor adventures. The transformation of the listed building was a project rooted in local craftsmanship. Over the course of two years, the more than 500-year-old property was carefully restored using exclusively local companies and regional materials. The architectural gem reopened in November 2024, blending historical heritage with contemporary design. Today, the house features 28 stylish studios accommodating between two and five guests. Most include a fully equipped kitchen, while selected units offer balconies, private saunas or beautifully preserved traditional tiled stoves. The interiors combine elegant simplicity with character, pairing black design elements with fine wood, metal accents and bright, high-quality fabrics. Guests also enjoy access to a dedicated wellness space on the second floor, featuring a Finnish sauna housed in a striking glass cube, a steam bath, experiential rain shower and ice fountain. A spiral staircase leads to the cosy relaxation area on the upper level, providing a peaceful retreat above the city. Should the weather discourage a mountain excursion, the modern fitness room offers state-of-the-art equipment for an energising workout. The culinary concept follows the same philosophy as the hotel itself: freedom of choice. Guests can cook in their own studio, discover the town’s vibrant dining scene or enjoy authentic Italian cuisine at the in-house Italian Restaurant, where flavours stretch from the Brenner Pass all the way to Sicily.
